Oliver Harris Metzner, age 99, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at his residence at Woodlawn Meadows memory care. He was born in California, Pennsylvania on January 7, 1925, one of John and Nancy Metzner’s 9 children.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Gwendolyn; their daughter, Rebecca Hammond; siblings: Al, Jack, Arnold, Leona, Sarah, Elizabeth, Francis and Margaret.
Oliver is survived by his children: Melanie Bynum (Dale) of Texas, Carl Metzner (Nancy) of Michigan, Naomi Arp (Terry) of Ohio, Scott Metzner (Renee) of Michigan; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Oliver enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class and was primarily responsible for guns and gun crews, assembled and repaired ships guns, handled and stowed ammunition.
After his service in the military, Oliver met and married the love of his life, Gwen. Oliver played the harmonica and guitar and previously found enjoyment in bowling, horseshoes, softball, fishing and dancing. He lived a life of service to many and was a deacon in his church.
Oliver’s family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-7 pm on Thursday, May 2, at Kish-Fabry Funeral Home Inc., 19 Legion St, Republic PA 15475. A funeral service will be held at 7 pm on Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Blaney Sproul officiating. Interment will take place at 11 am on Friday, May 3, at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Rd, Bridgeville PA 15017.
